It is scheduled to be completed and begin operations by the end of 2023. The goal of this project is to boost the growth of tourism and economic development in the Yucatán Peninsula. With 19 stations, the train will provide visitors to the region with easier access to several small towns and Mayan villages. 

The Mexican government estimates that the Maya Train will attract more than 3 million tourists annually during the first few years and transport around 8,000 passengers daily.
